Men's Basketball Drops Fourth Straight

FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior guard James Williams poured in 14 of his 20 points in the first half and finished with a career-high six three pointers to help the Long Island University Blackbirds come away with an 80-65 win over Sacred Heart University in a Northeast Conference men's basketball game on Saturday. The loss was the fourth straight for the Pioneers and dropped them to 9-12 overall and 6-6 in the NEC.

A three-pointer by junior Tavio Hobson with 13:28 to go in the first half put SHU ahead 10-6, but two Aubin Scott free throws knotted the score at 14-14 with 9:59 to play. LIU, 7-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference, went on a 7-0 run after that and took a 21-14 with 8:01 left in the half. The Blackbirds would never trail again and led 36-30 at the break.

Williams hit three threes in the first seven minutes of the second half to help his team extend the lead to 53-38. Sacred Heart wouldn't get closer than 12 points the rest of the game.

Aubin finished with 15 points for LIU, that has now won three of its last four games to climb back into the NEC playoff race. Sophomore guard Randy Jones had 14 points, including a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line. Junior forward Kellen Allen had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Senior center Kibwe Trim, the leading scorer in the NEC, finished with a game high 25 points for the Pioneers. Hobson and sophomore guard Drew Shubik chipped in ten apiece. Sophomore forward Brice Brooks had a career-high ten rebounds.
