Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 17, 2006) - For the second-straight game, the Sacred Heart women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead in the second half but saw it slip away as the Brown Bears posted three scores in the span of 4:22 to come away with a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. The Pioneers will return home next weekend after a 0-8-0 start to the season on the road.

The Bears held a distinct advantage in shots in the first half, 16-2, but couldn't punch one in the back of the net. Brown nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when senior Jill Mansfield's shot from the right wing, headed for the far corner of the net, just missed going in as it hit the left post.

With the two teams still knotted at 0-0 at the start of the second half, Brown pressured the Sacred Heart defense to start the second, but again, couldn't find the back of the net. After a missed opportunity on a Brown free kick, the Pioneers countered, and were awarded their only corner kick of the game in the 56th minute. Senior captain Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) served a perfect ball into the box, and fellow captain Alyssa Long (Smithfield, RI) headed it past Brown freshman Brenna Hogue to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneer defense could keep Brown in check and an ignited Bear attack came alive when Mansfield, who led Brown with a game-high nine shots, re-entered the game in the 66th minute. Just 32 seconds after coming back into the contest, Mansfield tallied her first of two assists when she crossed the ball into the box from the right wing. Freshman Melissa Kim one-timed the ball into the top of the net to tie the game, 1-1, at 66:20. Just 59 seconds later, Moos was the beneficiary of another Mansfield cross, as the senior leading scorer headed the ball past Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) at 67:59, giving Brown a lead it would not relinquish, 2-1. Moos provided some insurance for the Bears 3:23 later with her second goal of the day off a feed from sophomore Lindsay Cunningham.

Brown finished with a 31-5 margin in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Mocarski recorded 12 saves for Sacred Heart, while Hogue picked up the win with three stops in the Brown net.

SHU will be home on Friday, September 22nd to host Holy Cross and on Sunday, September 24th to host Maine.
