Senior guard Drew Shubik (Stoystown, PA) was a one-man gang on Thursday night at Fairleigh Dickinson University, finishing with 16 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, nine assists and three steals to lead the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to a 92-81 win over the Knights. The win was the sixth straight for the Pioneers, moving them to 12-10 overall and 9-2 in the Northeast Conference.
FDU, 6-13 and 2-7, came out red hot and took an early 24-19 lead. The Pioneers then used a 13-2 run to take a 32-26 lead with 9:00 left in the first half. Sophomore Corey Hassan (Merrimack, NH) sparked the run, scoring eight points in his first three minutes in the game off the bench.
The Pioneers took a 48-43 lead into the locker room at the half on the strength of 15 points from senior Brice Brooks (Silverdale, WA). Drew Shubik (Stoystown, PA) added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Manny Ubilla paced FDU with 17 points in the period.
A pair of threes by Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT) and a Shubik layup to start the second half helped the Pioneers open up a 56-43 lead. Granato drained his third trey of the half with 16:20 to go and SHU led 59-47.
A three-point play by Ryon Howard with 8:15 left gave the Pioneers their biggest lead at 79-64. Ubilla, who finished the game with 29 points, tried to keep his team in the game but the Pioneers but a Shubik layup with 3:59 left had the Pioneers ahead 86-75 and they were able to coast home from there.
Howard also finished with a double-double for the Pioneers with 12 points and ten rebounds. Brooks finished with 17 points, while Granato had 14 and Hassan 11. SHU turned the ball over just nine times in the game and shot 44 percent from three-point range (12-27).
