Sophomore Warren Edney led four Fairfield University players in double figures with 14 points as the Stags defeated visiting Sacred Heart University 70-54 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 0-2, while Fairfield improved to 1-1.
Senior Joey Henley (Kent, WA) led the Pioneers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior Ryon Howard (Bronx, NY) was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 11.
Senior guard Jonathan Han had another strong performance for the Stags with 11 points and a game-high seven assists.
Fairfield scored the first five points of the game and never trailed as it opened up a 12-point halftime lead. The Pioneers closed within seven at 43-36 on a Henley layup with 16:16 left in the game but would never get any closer. A 10-2 Stag run, capped by a Mike Evanovich trey with 11:27 left took the fight out of the Pioneers.
SHU committed 21 turnovers in the game, leading to 21 Fairfield points. The Stags also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and had 18 second-chance points.
The Pioneers will play again on Thursday at Providence College at 7:00 pm.
