Surkes's Big Day at the Plate Leads to Two SHU Wins

Baltimore, Md. (March 16, 2013)—The Sacred Heart Softball team is 4-0 at the UMBC Tournament in Baltimore, Md. after collecting two wins Saturday against La Salle (8-0) and Coppin State (5-1). Nicki Surkes (Brightwaters, N.Y.) went 7-for-8 at the plate today knocking in five runs for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart racked up 15 hits against LaSalle. Surkes, Melissa Tobin (Hudson, Mass.) and Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) both batted in two runs, while Surkes went 4-4 from the plate. Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) picked up her sixth win of the season—now 6-3—pitching a complete shut out six-inning game, giving up just five hits while striking out six.

Surkes batted in three more runs in the 5-1 win over Coppin State, while Sidor and Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.), who earned the win, notched one. Wentworth went 4 2/3 innings giving up the one run on three hits and striking out three before Sidor came in for the save.

The Pioneers wrap up play in the UMBC Tournament Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. when they take on Morgan State.
