Sacred Heart Wins Second Straight Game, Defeats Wagner 21-8

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team rolled to its second consecutive win Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wagner Seahawks 21-8 at Wagner College Stadium.

The Pioneers last scored at least 20 goals in a game on March 3, 2007 when Sacred Heart won 22-5 over Wagner. Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) and Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) each led the Pioneers with six points. Gannon had a career-high six assists, the most by a Sacred Heart player since Peter Greco had six in the game against Wagner on March 3, 2007.

Marquis had three goals and a season-high three assists. Matt King (Brewster, N.Y.) and Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) each ha d a game-high four goals. Senior midfielder Shane Foley (South Brunswick, N.H.) extended his goal-scoring streak to 10 games with a hat trick. Freshman Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) had a career-high four points on two goals and two assists.

Sacred Heart (2-8, 0-2 NEC) got on the scoreboard early and often, taking a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game on goals by King, Foley, and Dauses. Wagner (1-9, 0-2) made the score 3-1 with 8:56 remaining in the opening quarter on a goal by Griffen LeClaire. Marquis then scored back-to-back goals, each with an assist from Gannon, to give the Pioneers' a 5-1 lead with 4:58 to play in the first. Forty seconds later, Foley scored an extra-man goal with an assist from Dauses to put Sacred Heart ahead 6-1.

The Pioneers continued to pour in goals in the second quarter. King and Mawdsley tallied goals early in the period, making the score 8-1 with 11:48 remanining in the period. After LeClaire scored the Seahawks' second goal, Sacred Heart finished the quarter on a 5-0 run. Mawdsley scored twice as Marquis, King, and Foley also notched goals to give the Pioneers a commanding 13-2 lead at halftime. Sacred Heart outshot Wagner 29-9 in the first half with 23 shots on goal.

Sacred Heart led by as many as 14 goals in the second half as Ian Farley (Camillus, N.Y.), Alec Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.), Matthew Bellucci (West Islip, N.Y.) and Mack Fuller (Newtown, Conn.) each scored their first goals of the season in the half. The Pioneers outshot Wagner 53-23, putting 38 shots on goal. Sacred Heart also won 25 of 33 faceoffs and held a 39-18 advantage in ground balls.

Sacred Heart returns home next Saturday, April 13, for a 7 p.m. game against Quinnipiac.
