Verrette Ties SHU's Division I Single-Season Goal Record As Pioneers Win At Mount 4-0

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Senior midfielder Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) scored twice Sunday to tie the Sacred Heart Division I women's soccer single-season goal record as the Pioneers won at Mount St. Mary's 4-0. Verrette's two tallies give her 13 on the season, tying her with Paula Pineda who had 13 in the 2002 season.

Sacred Heart (7-8-2, 2-3-1 NEC) dominated possession in the first half, taking seven of the first eight shots in the game. The Pioneers first shot on goal came in the sixth minute when an Annika Simmons (Coventry, Conn.) strike was stopped by Mountaineers goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza. Emily Dawidczyk also had a shot saved in the seventh minute. Sacred Heart broke through for the game's first goal in the 18th minute when Dawidczyk weaved through two defenders on a breakaway and put a shot hight over Cocozza into the net. Less than two minutes later, Dawidczyk struck again. This time, the sophomore forward chipped a ball from 25 yards out that bounced over Cocozza's head and into the net, making the score 2-0.

Verrette scored her first goal in the 26th minute, dribbling through two defenders to let loose a shot from 18 yards out that found the net. As the clock approached the half-hour, Verrette tallied her second goal to give Sacred Heart a commanding 4-0 lead. Sacred Heart outshot Mount St. Mary's (2-16, 1-6 NEC) 13-4 in the opening half, with Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.) having to make just two saves in the first half. The Mountaineers had seven shots in the second half as a resolute Pioneer defense held them to just one shot on goal. Schwartz stopped that lone attempt on goal in the 88th minute from Alicia Mirando, preserving her sixth clean sheet of the season.

Sacred Heart outshot Mount St. Mary's 20-11 in the game, putting nine shots on goal.

The Pioneers close out the regular season with a pair of games at Campus Field. Sacred Heart hosts Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.
