Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Trailing 1-0 late in the second half to the Brown Bears at Stevenson Field Wednesday night, the Sacred Heart women's soccer team scored twice in the final 15 minutes to rally for a 2-1 win. Sophomore Emily Dawidczyk (Oxford, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.
Sacred Heart (4-5-1) took three of the first four shots in the game, but attempts by Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, Conn.), Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.), and Marissa Christy (Massapequa, N.Y.) were all wide of goal in the first 18 minutes. Brown had the night's first shot on goal in the 21st minute when Kirsten Belinsky had a shot saved by the Pioneers' Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.). Sacred Heart quickly countered with its first shot on goal as Monica Re (Doylestown, Pa.) put a shot right at Brown goalkeeper Mallory Yant in the 22nd minute. The Bears' defense held the Pioneers without a shot for the remainder of the half as the first half ended scoreless.
Brown (3-4) quickly broke the tie in the second half. Chloe Brown fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box past Schwartz 1:33 into the period to put the Bears ahead 1-0. Sacred Heart tied the game 1-1 in the 75th minute when Cosmedy took a Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, N.Y.) free kick and scored her second goal of the season. Schwartz kept the game tied in the 80th minute, stopping an Allie Reilly shot. Kim McNally (Canton, Mass.) came close to putting Sacred Heart in the lead in the 86th minute, ringing a shot off the post. However, the Pioneers did go in front seconds later as Christy found Dawidczyk for the go-ahead goal. The Bears had three chances to force overtime, but each shot went wide as Sacred Heart hung on for the win.
Sacred Heart was outshot by Brown 17-10, but had three shots on goal to the Bears' four. Schwartz needed to make just three saves to earn the win in goal as Yant had one save for Brown.
The Pioneers return to Campus Field on Tuesday, Sept. 30 for a 5 p.m. game against Dartmouth.
