Verrette's Tenth Goal Of The Season Vaults SHU Past Dartmouth In Overtime

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) scored her 10th goal of the season Tuesday night as the Sacred Heart women's soccer team defeated the Dartmouth Big Green 1-0 in overtime at Campus Field.

Sacred Heart (5-5-1) controlled possession early Tuesday night, but didn't have its first shot until the 19th minute of play. Elisa Robiglio (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) played a cross to Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, Conn.) in the 18-yard box, with Cosmedy heading the ball wide of goal. Six minutes later, Dartmouth  made a run into the Pioneers' end, with Lucielle Kozlov firing a shot from about 20 yards out that forced Sacred Heart goalkeeper Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.) to make a diving save. In the 31st minute, Monica Re (Doylestown, Pa.) capped a Pioneer run with a shot from 18 yards out that was stopped by the Big Green's Tatiana Saunders. With six minutes left in the half, Dartmouth had the best opportunity to score for either team in the first half. Jackie Friedman played a cross into the box to Jessica Lukas. Lukas one-touched the ball as Schwartz made a point-blank save to keep the game scoreless heading into the second half.

It was Dartmouth (3-3-2) that controlled play in the second half. Six minutes into the period, Lindsay Knutson took a throughball from Kozlov and fired a shot right at Schwartz who made the save. The Pioneers' first shot of the second half came in the 54th minute when Marissa Christy (Massapequa, N.Y.) took a shot from 20 yards out and pushed it wide of goal. The Big Green had a chance to get on the scoresheet at the hour mark. Kozlov pounced on a loose ball and took a shot which was stopped by Schwartz. The Pioneer goalkeeper also had to make a save off of a Dartmouth corner in the 80th minute.

In the 86th minute, Emily Dawidczyk (Oxford, Mass.) broke through the Big Green defense but her shot went over the crossbar as the game headed to extra time. Less than a minute into overtime, Dartmouth's Tasha Wilkins got behind the Pioneers' defense but her shot went over the goal. In the 95th minute, Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, N.Y.) played a free kick into the Dartmouth 18-yard box. Verrette emerged on the ball through a sea of players and scored to give Sacred Heart the 1-0 win.

Dartmouth outshot Sacred Heart 22-11 for the game. Schwartz earned her fourth clean sheet of the season, making a season-high 13 saves. Saunders had three saves for the Big Green.

Sacred Heart opens Northeast Conference play on Sunday, October 5 against Bryant at Campus Field at 1 p.m.
