Pioneers Stumble Against First Place St. Francis Brooklyn, 71-62

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (February 14, 2015)—Cane Broome (East Hartford, Conn.), Evan Kelley (Norwalk, Conn.) and Jordan Allen (Bayshore, N.Y.) led the Pioneers tallying 12 points as the Sacred Heart men's basketball team fell to St. Francis Brooklyn 71-62 in the Pope Physical Education Center Saturday afternoon. The loss drops SHU to 12-15 overall and 6-8 in Northeast Conference play.

The Terriers earned the first four points of the game with a pair of lay-ins from Chris Hooper, but Allen answered with two of his own to level the score at 4. Tyreek Jewel broke the game open for SFBK draining a three, which sparked a 9-2 run giving it a 13-6 lead.

With 10:24 left in the first half, Steve Glowiak landed a triple right in front of the St. Francis Brooklyn bench for his 220th career trey moving him into sole possession of third on the program's all-time list.

Cane Broome cut the Terriers' lead to just two points, 26-24, right before the 6:23 media timeout landing a deep three from the top of the key capping off a seven-point Pioneer streak. With 5:30 left in the half, Phil Gaetano hit the big three to give SHU its first lead of the game, 27-26.

That was just the beginning as Broome, Kelley and Filip Nowicki (Wloclawek, Poland) tacked on six more points for SHU as the Pioneers held the Terriers scoreless for nearly six minutes with the clock closing in on the halftime buzzer.

The Pioneers owned a 33-28 lead with less than a minute before the half, but Gunnar Olafsson got off a triple at the buzzer making it a four-point game.

A 9-2 run to open the second half saw SFBK reclaim the lead, 40-37, in the first two and a half minutes. The Pioneers remained close keeping the score always staying within two points before a pair of free throws from Brent Jones sent the Terriers on a 10-2 run for a 49-41 lead.

Sacred Heart chipped away at the lead, making both shots of the one-and-one, Kelley made it a one-possession game, 60-57, at the five-minute mark. St. Francis Brooklyn quickly responded with four unanswered points from Jalen Cannon and Jones once again extending the Terriers' lead and forcing SHU Head Coach Anthony Latina to call a timeout to draw up an offense.

The Pioneers got five more points out of Kelley and Allen, but it wasn't enough to catch the first place Terriers.

Sacred Heart returns home Thursday night to host Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m. on Coach Bike Court in the William H. Pitt Center
