Box Score CONWAY, S.C. (February 20, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team dropped the season-opener 4-1 to Boston College in the opening game of the Chanticleer Showdown Friday afternoon.
Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.J.) knocked in the Pioneers' only run. Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.) led off the fifth inning with a single and made her way around the base path thanks to a single from Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and a walk by Linsey DeDomenico (Northford, Conn.) With the bases loaded and just one out, D'Addario stepped to the plate. The sophomore pulled the ball into left field for an RBI single.
Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) got the loss for SHU giving up two runs on just one hit in the fourth inning. The senior took down the Eagles in order in the first inning striking out the first two batters, before BC threatened in the top of the second. The first two batters worked Wentworth for walks and each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Chimento. Wentworth got out of the inning unscaved getting Chloe Sharabba to fly out to left field and Jordan Weed to ground out to third base.
The top of the fourth looked similar for the Eagles as the first two batters walked. Wentworth struck out Chimento this time for her third strikeout of the game before Sharabba ripped a double to center field driving in both runs.
Junior Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) came in in relief for Wentworth in the top of the fifth striking out the first batter she faced before getting a pair of ground outs to end the inning. She got into trouble in the sixth giving up two runs—a lead-off homerun to Tatiana Cortez and an RBI triple to Sharabba three batters later.
Sacred Heart continues play in the Chanticleer Showdown tomorrow when they'll face Murray State at 9:30 a.m. and Coastal Carolina at 11:45 a.m.
