Box Score 2 CONWAY, S.C. (February 21, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team lost twice on Saturday falling to Murray State 2-1 in the day's first game and Coastal Carolina 11-1 later on. The Pioneers are now 0-3 after two days of competition at the Chanticleer Challenge.
Sophomore Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) started in the circle against Murray State and pitched 2.1 scoreless inning giving up two hits while striking out one batter, but after issuing her fourth walk in the third inning, Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) took over with runners on first and second. The junior got out of the inning with two fly outs to hold off the Racers.
In the top of the third, SHU scored its only run of the game. Catcher Alyssa Pitre (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off the inning with an infield single allowing Jessica Schild (East Northport, N.Y.) to come in to run the bases for her. Next batter Lauren Delgafillo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) laid down a sacrifice bunt towards first base moving Schild over to second. In her first at-bat of the game, Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) knocked the second infield single of the inning putting Pioneer runners on first and third. With Schild in scoring position and one down, rookie Hannah Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) smacked a single to right field for her first collegiate RBI.
Sacred Heart managed just one hit through the rest of the game, a bunt single from senior Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.), while Mallory gave up two runs—one in the fifth inning and one in the bottom of the seventh—getting her first loss of the season.
SHU pitchers could not figure out a way to stop Coastal Carolina's bats in the second game of the day. Starting pitcher Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) gave seven runs on five hits through two innings before the Pioneers got on the scoreboard. In the top of the third with two out, Nadler, who was 2-for-5 on the day, ripped a solo homerun over the left field fence cutting the Chanticleers' lead to 7-1.
Kelli Licursi (Somers, N.Y.) gave up another three runs to Coastal Carolina before getting pulled for Carlson. The sophomore managed to shut down the Chanticleer and get out of the bottom of the third, but a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the fourth solidified the win for Coastal Carolina.
The Pioneers complete play in the Chanticleer Challenge Sunday against Bucknell at 9:00 a.m.
