Sibthorp, Wiegand Lead Pioneers to 7-4 Win Over La Salle

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD (March 15, 2015)—Justine Sibthorp and McKenna Wiegand knocked in two runs each in the Sacred Heart softball team's 7-4 win over La Salle Sunday. Due to poor weather in the Baltimore, Md. area all weekend, this was the only game SHU played in the UMBC Spring Classic. The victory improved the Pioneers' season record to 4-11, while La Salle fell to 1-6.

Jamie Carlson silenced the Explorers' bats through the first three innings all owing the Pioneers to be the first ones of the scoreboard. Dani Warnken led off the bottom of the third with a walk. Two batters later, Kate Nadler worked a walk of her own to put runners on first and second with one out. Jessica Schild, who pinch ran for Warnken, and Nadler got bumped into scoring position thanks to Lauren Delgadillo's single through the left side. Senior Sibthorp came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out tapping a single for two RBI, knocking out La Salle starter Mary Cate Scott.

A pair of Explorer fielding errors allowed two more Pioneer runs in the third inning, and put runners on first and second still with just one out for Wiegand. The sophomore outfielder pulled a single to left field scoring Kelyn Fillmore and Victoria D'Addario giving SHU a 6-0 lead after three.

La Salle answered with two runs off two hits in the top of the fourth, and another two runs off Kacie Wentworth, who came in for Carlson in the top of the fifth, lessening the scoring gap to two runs, 6-4.

The Pioneers picked up one more run in the bottom of the fifth. Hannah Ford and D'Addario led off the inning with singles putting runners on the corners. After a SHU strikeout, Linsey DeDomenico, pinch-hitting for Warnken, hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Ford for the final run of the game.

After a week off, Sacred Heart heads to Boston for a doubleheader against Boston University on March 26 before opening Northeast Conference play at Robert Morris and Saint Francis U that weekend.
