Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by a career-high five goals and six points from sophomore midfielder Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.), the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team won its second consecutive game with a 14-11 victory over the Lafayette Leopards at Campus Field Tuesday.
Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) had five points on three goals and two assists. Freshman Reed Avveduti (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had three points on a goal and two assists. Mike Calvagna (Holbrook, N.Y.) won 20 of 24 faceoffs with 11 groundballs. Chase Godfrey (Glenville, N.Y.) added six groundballs and a team-high three caused turnovers. Jon Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 13 saves in goal.
It was Lafayette (1-6) that scored first Tuesday, as Eric Joseph scored at the 10:05 mark to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart (3-2) responded with a three goal run. Dodge, Bryce Jurk (Burlington, Ont.), and Alec Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.) each scored to put the Pioneers ahead 3-1 with 4:28 to play in the opening quarter. After Morgan Westby scored with 0:23 seconds left in the first to get Lafayette back within one 3-2, Dodge scored his second goal with 0:06 to play to give Sacred Heart a 4-2 lead.
Jerome Rigor (Pleasanton, Calif.) put the Pioneers up by three 0:28 into the second quarter, slamming home a feed from Avveduti. Lafayette came back with two goals in the next 2:20 as Jason Sands' man-up goal at the 12:12 mark made the score 5-4. Sacred Heart would go on another three-goal run late in the quarter. It started at the 4:00 mark on an Ian Farley (Camillus, N.Y.) tally. Thirty-nine seconds later, Dodge scored on a long-range pass from Avveduti. Masi capped the run with 2:40 to play in the half, making the score 8-4. The Leopards scored the final goal of the half as Sonny Round got the Leopards within three before halftime, 8-5.
The two teams traded goals to open the third quarter, as Farley's second goal of the game put Sacred Heart up 10-7 with 8:43 remaining. Lafayette got within two goals three times in the quarter. Round's second goal of the game at the 4:30 mark made the score 11-9 Pioneers, and that would be as close as Lafayette would get. Back-to-back goals by Masi and Avveduti put Sacred Heart ahead 13-9 with 10:31 to play in the fourth quarter.
Lafayette outshot Sacred Heart 47-33, but the Pioneers held a 43-26 advantage in groundballs. The Leopards were 3-for-4 on the extra man. Sands led Lafayette with three goals and two assists.
Sacred Heart closes its current three-game homestand on Saturday, March 21 as the Pioneers open Northeast Conference play against Robert Morris.
