Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday after a 10-2 loss to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Pioneers' two-goal output was their lowest since scoring two at Maryland on April 18, 2006. Sophomore midfielder Bryce Jurk (Burlington, Ont.) scored his eighth goal of the season, and assisted on Julian Garritano's (Markham, Ont.). Jurk also led Sacred Heart with five groundballs Saturday as Chase Godfrey (Glenville, N.Y.) added four.
Mount St. Mary's (3-6, 1-1 NEC) outshot the Pioneers 16-2 in the first quarter, forcing four turnovers. Sacred Heart (4-3, 1-1 NEC) goalie Jon Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) did his part to halt the barrage of Mountaineer shots, making eight of his 14 saves in the first quarter. Evan Gormley put Mount St. Mary's on the scoreboard with 3:57 remaining to make the score 1-0. Mark Hojnoski then scored with 0:21 left in the period to give the Mountaineers' a 2-0 lead. The Mount led 3-0 at halftime after Bubba Johnson scored the lone goal of the second quarter at the 9:36 mark off of a Justin Gosnell assist.
Gormley scored two of Mount St. Mary's first three goals in the third quarter, capping a 6-0 Mountaineer run at the 4:31 mark. Jurk scored 13 seconds later for the first Sacred Heart goal, making the score 6-1. Garritano scored man-up with 10:39 to play in the fourth quarter to put the score at 7-2, but that would be as close as Sacred Heart would get. Mount St. Mary's scored the final three goals of the game to make the final score 10-2.
Mount St. Mary's outshot Sacred Heart 36-30 and held a 29-24 advantage in ground balls. The Mountaineers' goalie Matt Vierheller made 12 saves. Gormley and Johnson each had hat tricks, while Gosnell also had three points on two goals and an assist.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Tuesday, March 31 when it travels to New Haven to take on #9/11 Yale at 7:00 p.m.
