Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, FL (March 4, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team dropped two games on the opening day of the 2015 Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. After being shutout by Presbyterian in the morning game 6-0, the Pioneers lost a close one to Saint Francis U 3-2 in the afternoon to fall to 1-10 on the season.
Presbyterian starter Kensley Loudermelk shut down SHU's offense in the day's first game. Only five Pioneers reached base with just one making it to second—Andrea Sidor on a one-out double to left-centerfield.
Sacred Heart starter Jamie Carlson falls to 1-3 on the season picking up the loss after just four innings of work. The sophomore struck out seven batter, but was charged with five runs when she couldn't get out of trouble in the fifth inning with no outs.
After holding the Red Flash scoreless for three innings, including getting out of a third-inning jam, SHU starting pitcher Adrianna Mallory gave up a one-run homerun in the top of the fourth to freshman infielder Madison Cabell for the first run of the game. The Pioneers went down in order in the bottom of the inning before SFU struck again in the top of the fifth. Elise Jancef led off the inning with a double and would eventually come around to score giving the Red Flash a 2-0 lead.
Sacred Heart got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Stephanie Appleberg led the inning off with an infield single before being bumped around the bases with singles from Sidor, Lauren Delgadillo and Justine Sibthorp.
Saint Francis extended its lead getting another run off the junior pitcher in the top of the sixth, but the Pioneer offense responded in turn in the bottom of the inning. Hannah Ford ripped a double to the fence ahead of Appleberg's single and Sidor's RBI walk, but the one run wasn't enough for SHU's second win of the season.
After an off-day on Thursday, the Pioneers will face Akron at 10:00 a.m. and Florida A&M at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
