Softball Drops Two to Fairleigh Dickinson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HACKENSACK, N.J. (April 26, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team suffered a pair of losses (5-2, 6-3) at the hands of the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Sunday afternoon. Rookie Lauren Delgadillo went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and a run scored as the Pioneers fall to 12-27 on the season and 4-10 in Northeast Conference play.

After threatening with a runner on third in both of the first two innings, SHU struck first in game one scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Delgadillo led off the inning reaching base after being hit by a pitch. The centerfielder rounded third and crossed the plate as No. 2 batter Justine Sibthorp hit a double to left field and advanced to third on the throw home. A perfectly placed sacrifice bunt down the first baseline from Kate Nadler allowed Sibthorp to score.

The Knights got both runs back in the bottom of the inning off SHU starter Jamie Carlson. The sophomore gave up the winning one-run homer to Emma DeLuca in the bottom of the fourth as the Pioneers left seven runners on base through the rest of the game.

After getting the loss in the first game, Carlson got the start in game two as well. Once again, Sacred Heart got on the board first scoring three unearned runs in the top of the second inning, but that would be all they got as the combination of Loren Stavrou and Meghan Reiner held the Pioneers to five base-runners through the latter five innings of the game.

Carlson gave up four runs through the first four innings on a pair of two-run shots. She put the lead-off batter of the fifth inning on first and from there her day was over. Throughout both games, she got 10 batters out on strikes. Kacie Wentworth came in to relieve Carlson in the fifth. After issuing a walk to the first batter she faced, the senior got Madison Lerma to swing at the third pitch before back-to-back singles for the Knights drove in a pair of runs effectively ending Wentworth's day as well. Adrianna Malloy got the call, and finally got out of the inning, striking out Deluca and getting Madelaine Wilen to groundout to second. Mallory allowed five runners to reach base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but none ever crossed the plate.

Sacred Heart returns home Tuesday for a single game against cross-town rival Fairfield University beginning at 3:30.
