Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Dana Cosmedy scored with 18 seconds remaining in overtime Friday night to lead the Sacred Heart women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the Iona Gaels at Campus Field.
After Sacred Heart (3-4-0) and Iona (1-8-0) played a scoreless first half, Cosmedy put the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 75th minute. The senior midfielder headed in a cross from Elisa Robiglio to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Iona responded with two goals in a span of four minutes to take a 2-1 advantage in the 83rd minute.
Alex Mesropyan tied the game in the 87th minute, hitting a low roller from distance past Iona goalkeeper Lauren Ferris to force overtime. Sacred Heart had all five shots in the extra period, with the last one coming off the head of Cosmedy. Just as she did in the first half, Cosmedy headed in a cross for the game-winner.
The Pioneers go on the road Sunday for a 1 p.m. match at Dartmouth.
FIRST HALF
- Marissa Christy and Melanie DaSilva both put shots wide of goal in the sixth and seventh minutes respectively
- Iona's Brianna Hernandez missed a wide-open net in the eighth minute
- Maggie Filja put shots over the crossbar in the 11th and 14th minutes
- Talia Schwartz made three saves in the first half, with the first one coming in the 23rd minute
- Mesropyan fired a free kick over the goal in the 35th minute
SECOND HALF
- Christy came close to scoring in the 46th minute, but put a shot wide
- Mesropyan had a header denied in the 68th minute by a diving save by Ferris.
