Pioneers Battle Bryant to 1-1 Draw on Senior Day

Fairfield, Conn.— The Sacred Heart women's soccer team battled Bryant to a 1-1 draw in their regular season finale at Campus Field. Prior to the game seniors Emily Dawidczyk, Emily Montgomery and Brittany Hamilton were honored as part of senior day. The Pioneers (8-5-5, 5-1-2 NEC) earned the third seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament next weekend. 

The Bulldogs (8-9-1, 4-3-1 NEC) out shot Sacred Heart 14-11 on the game. Sophomore Alyssa Chirichella got the Pioneers up late in the first as she booted a pass from fellow sophomore Maranda Gibbons from 25 yards out up and over Bryant goaltender Kaylan Conrad. Chirichella netted her first career tally. The Bulldogs turned on their attack in the second half as Sacred Heart began to slow down. Bryant would answer on a free kick by goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad in the 85th minute. Both teams battled in overtime, with Sacred Heart getting a big chance on a through ball to Lindsay Corallo in the second overtime but was denied by Conrad with 42 seconds to go in the game. 

The Pioneers will head to Loretto, Pennsylvania for the 2016 NEC Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by Saint Francis U. Stay tuned on sacredheartpioneers.com for updates on opponent and game time. 

First Half

- Sambuco got her first of five saves in the 16th minute on a shot by Marissa Grasso.

- Gibbons with a shot from 12 yards out but it is saved by Conrad.

- Chirichella gets the Pioneers on the board with her first career tally, on a 25 foot shot up and over Conrad.

Second Half

- SHU had two corner kick opportunities early in the second half, but were knocked down by the Bulldogs offense.

- Conrad scored the free kick goal in the 85th minute to tie it at 1-1.

- Sambuco made a diving stop on a shot by Kiana Woods in the 86th minute.

First Overtime

- Claire Bergh missed high with a header in the 96th minute for Bryant.

- Caitlyn Buckley's shot went wide right as she collected the blocked shot in the 97th minute.

Second Overtime

- Sambuco secured her biggest save of the afternoon on a shot in the 101st minute by Grasso.

- Corallo nearly gets shot off on a breakaway but Conrad comes up to make the stop.
