Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team moved to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play with a 4-0 victory over Wagner (2-10) on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (5-4-3) offensive attack pushed the game open early with three first half goals. All four goal scorers for Sacred Heart netted their first goals of the season. Sophomore Nicole Sambuco (Happauge, N.Y.) had another solid game with three saves on three Seahawks shots on goal. Sambuco has now secured four consecutive shutouts and six overall on the year.
Sophomore Lindsay Corallo (Jackson, N.J.) opened the game with her strike in the 11th minute on a play off the defender through the right side. Freshman Caitlin Buckley (Levittown, N.Y.) shortly after in the 21st minute, taking Wagner's clear attempt from 12 yards out to the back of the net. Sacred Heart's final tally of the half came in the 25th minute on a long cross by sophomore Maranda Gibbons to fellow sophomore Danielle Karpiej (South Windsor, Conn.), who was in the middle of the box to send it in. To close out the scoring affair for the Pioneers, sophomore Alyssa Hyland (East Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in a free kick by sophomore counterpart Alex Mesropyan (Mahwah, N.J.) from three yards out to seal the game.
The Pioneers will head to Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday October 14 for their first NEC road contest. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
First Half
- Corallo finds the back of the net from 12 yards out for the Pioneers first tally at the 11-minute mark.
- Buckley takes a one hopper off the Wagner clear attempt for her first goal of the season in the 21st minute.
- Karpiej caps the Pioneers first half with a goal in the 25th minute.
Second Half
- Wagner goalie Katelyn Murphy makes a save on Karpiej's header attempt in the 74th minute.
- Hyland closes out the game with a chip shot off Mesropyan's free kick in the 89th minute.
