Box Score LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (October 9, 2016)—After finishing the second overtime still tied at one, the Sacred Heart field hockey team lost the shootout 3-0 to fall to Siena 2-1 on the road in the Pioneers' MAAC opener Sunday afternoon.
Entering the second half down 1-0, SHU earned a penalty corner just nine minutes into the period. Allie Brouhard (Washington, N.J.) took the corner for the Pioneers and fed Nichole Tolli (Poughquag, N.Y.) at the top of the circle. The junior set it up for Rebecca Hauser (Mohrsville, Pa.), who took a hard swing netting her fourth goal of the season and tying the game.
There the score sat for the remainder of regulation and through two overtime periods forcing the teams into a shootout. The Saints managed to get all three of their shoot-off attempts past SHU goalkeeper Emily Degennaro (Wading River, N.Y.), while the Pioneers did not make one.
SHU returns to Johnson Field Friday to host conference foe Rider at 6:00 p.m. before hosting Bryant two days later for a noon start with Senior Day ceremonies preceding.
First Half:
- As they did in all but one period, the Pioneers outshot Siena in the first half, 3-2, and put all of their shots on goal
- Despite SHU's aggressive offense, the Saints went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. In the 22nd minute, Fabiana Citro took a shot from the top right side of the circle and put it inside the left post for the game's first score
Second Half:
- After Hauser evened the score in the 44th minute, the Pioneers' offense did not slow down in the second half as SHU went on to outshoot Siena 7-2 in the period
- Both teams had their chances to score through the latter 24 minutes of the half as they each earned three corners during that time, but with neither team being able to convert a corner for a goal, the game went to overtime
First Overtime:
- Siena came on strong in the first overtime period, outshooting Sacred Heart 8-1 and earning four penalty corners
- Still, at the end of 15 minutes of 7v7, the score remained tied, 1-1
Second Overtime:
- The Pioneers regrouped before the second overtime period to make sure the game was back in their hands
- SHU's offense took its hacks, outshooting Siena 4-2 and earning four corners to the Saints' one, but were still unable to score
Shootout:
- Siena's Fariyah Omarsha stepped up to take the first stroke of the shootout. The sophomore made it, giving the Saints and early advantage
- Rookie Marlena Koellner (Feasterville, Pa.) took the first stroke for SHU and missed it
- Molly Hagen extended Siena's lead making the team's second stroke-off attempt, while Hauser missed Sacred Heart's second
- Jaycie St. John scored the eventual gamewinner winning the shootout for the Saints 3-0
