Box Score BALTIMORE, MD (March 19, 2016)—McKenna Weigand (Gilbert, Ariz.) knocked in two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as La Salle answered with four in the bottom of the inning sending the Sacred Heart softball team home from the UMBC Spring Classic with a 6-4 loss. The junior collected two hits and reached base all four at bats as the Pioneers fell to 6-14 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings
- The Explorers struck first getting two runs off rookie starter Kristin McCann (Phoenix, Ariz.). Christina Bascara led off the inning reaching base after getting hit by a pitch, she move to second on Valerie Pineiro's single through the left side. With runners on first and second, Suzanne Swanicke used a sacrifice bunt to put them both in scoring position. The two runners came around to score on a fielding error before McCann got out of the inning thanks to a double play
- SHU put its first run on the board in the top of the fifth. Stephanie Appelberg (Monroe, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to the right field gap, and advanced to third on Wiegand's first single of the day. After Lauren Delgadillo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) lined out, Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) hit a sac fly to deep center to send Appelberg home
- While McCann mowed down La Salle in order over the next two innings, the Pioneers evened the score at two capitalizing on the Explorers' fielding error
- Sacred Heart threatened in the top of the seventh, but Mary Cate Scott, who took over for Marlo Roadcap after four innings, got out of a jam as SHU stranded two runners. McCann again put the Explorers down in order in the bottom half of the inning to send the game into extras
- The Pioneers put the first two runners in scoring position, but both got out before crossing the plate. McCann and Linsey DeDomenico (Northford, Conn.) both reached on fielders choice before coming around to give SHU a two-run advantage on Wiegand's single up the middle
- Rookie McCann struggled in the bottom of the eighth, giving up two runs on two hits by the Explorers' first two batters. After she got out Michelle Hagarty on a sac bunt, Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) took over in the circle. But the senior didn't have much luck either. After giving up a triple to the first batter she faced, Mallory gave up the game-winning homerun to Bascara to end the game
HIGHLIGHTS:
- McCann struck out four
- Weigand went 2-for-2 with two walks in four at bats, reaching base in every plate appearance
FOR THE FOES:
- Bascara went 1-for-3 with her one hit being the walk-off, two-run homer, and scored twice
- Roadcap struck out six of the 15 batters she faced in just four innings
