Box Score Buffalo, NY—The Sacred Heart women's soccer team kicked off their 2016 season with a 2-1 victory over Canisius College Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers got on the board first at 18:06 mark in the first half, as senior
Emily Dawidczyk (Oxford, Mass) crossed a ball intended for junior
Danielle Karpiej (South Windsor, Conn,) but it was deflected by a Canisius defender resulting in a Golden Griffs own goal.
Canisius came out the gate in the second half, tieing it up at 1-1 with a goal from Shawna Adams. Adams found the open net on an assist by Maddie Good.
The Golden Griffs would continue to control the ball, rifling off six more in the second half. But Sacred Heart would get the final tally, with freshman Olivia Crema (Litchfield, N.H) netting her first career goal in the 73rd minute. Crema took a clear attempt by Canisius off her corner kick and rifled the ball to the upper left corner to give the Pioneers the 2-1 lead and eventual win. Sophomore Nicole Sambuco (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) finished the game with four saves in her first start behind the net for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook.
First Half

- Canisius own goal off a defender's deflection on Dawidcyzk's cross.
Second Half
- Adams picks up Canisius's first goal in 46th minute on wide open net, assisted by Maddie Good.
- Crema kicks Sacred Heart first corner kick of the game. She retained the Canisius clear attempt and rifles shot to far upper corner for her first career goal.
