Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by six goals and seven points from Max Tuttle, the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team won its third consecutive game Tuesday with a 14-10 victory over the Lafayette Leopards at Campus Field.
Tuttle was one goal away from tying his career-high of seven, set last season against Mount St. Mary's. Joe Saggese had five points, scoring two goals with three assists. Long stick midfielder Nick Albanese had a career-high two goals while collecting eight groundballs. Ryan O'Donoghue added five groundballs and caused four turnovers. Brooks Dutton made seven saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (3-1) came out firing to start the game, scoring four goals in less than minutes. Tuttle put the Pioneers on the board 2:54 into the game. Twenty-four seconds later, Albanese put a Landon Kramer pass past Lafayette goalie Jonathan Anastos to make the score 2-0. Saggese put Sacred Heart ahead 3-0 with his goal at the 10:40 mark, assisted by Brian Masi. Matthew Vezza then scored his first career goal with 9:07 remaining in the first.
Lafayette (0-4) then scored two goals in seven seconds, as Eric Joseph and Michael Sullivan cut the Leopards deficit in half with 7:36 left in the first. Tuttle put the Pioneers back up by four, 6-2, with goals at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter and at 13:45 of the second. Sacred Heart took an 8-3 lead at halftime, as Saggese and Albanese both scored in the final minute of the second quarter.
The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game with 2:00 remaining in the third quarter. Masi capped a three-goal SHU run with an assist from Tuttle to give Sacred Heart an 11-4 lead. The Leopards then went on a 4-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to three, 11-8, with 11:30 to play in the fourth. The two teams then traded goals, as two more Tuttle goals as well as a Bryce Jurk tally made the final score 14-10.
Sacred Heart outshot Lafayette 35-27 and held a 34-27 advantage in ground balls. The Leopards won 15 of 25 faceoffs and were 3-for-9 on extra-man opportunities. Eric Joseph, Kevin Lewis, and Scott McAvoy each had two goals and an assist for Lafayette. Anastos had 13 saves in goal.
The Pioneers are next in action on Saturday, March 4 with a 1 p.m. game at Providence.
