Strong Defense and a Pair of Goals Earn Pioneers First NEC Win of the Season

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer earned the team's first Northeast Conference victory this afternoon as they defeated LIU Brooklyn by a score of 2-1. The team returns to action Friday, Oct. 5 when they travel to in-state rival Central Connecticut State. Game-time is set for 6:00 p.m.

The Pioneers would come out firing shots early in the first half Christina Palanza and Melanie DaSilva as both shots would be saved to keep the game scoreless at 6:49. SHU would dominate the first half in shots as the Pioneers tallied 11 shots with nine on goal as the Blackhawks only attempted two shots with none on goal. At 33:59 the Pioneers would score the opening goal of the game courtesy of Maranda Gibbons off an assist by Taylor Cassale to put SHU ahead 1-0. The Pioneers would fire off three more shots before the end of the half as no more shots would result in a goal keeping the first half score 1-0 in favor of SHU.

Off a pass by Alyssa Hyland, senior Alex Mesropyan would bank in a header to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead at 48:14 to kick off the second half. SHU would continue to fire off even more shots in the second half as the Pioneers continued their dominance in shot totals as they tallied 13 shots with 10 on goal while the SHU defense held up LIU Brooklyn to just four shots with three on goal. LIU Brooklyn would squeeze a goal by the SHU defense as Brittany Fazin would find the back of the net a 60:01 to tighten the SHU lead to 2-1. But that would be the only goal the SHU defense would allow giving the Pioneers its first NEC victory of the season 2-1.
