NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Within the first few seconds of overtime, Isabelle Chamberlain drilled in the winning shot for the Sacred Heart University field hockey team on Friday. The Pioneers defeated conference opponent, Bryant, 4-3.
With their first Northeast Conference victory, the Red & White improved to 1-7 and Bryant dropped to 0-10 on the season.
Julia Chang opened up the scoring three minutes into the first quarter with her first goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, Mia Katterman slapped one into the net off Chamberlain's rebounded shot to put SHU up 2-0.
Halfway through the second quarter, Kayla Kruk tallied her second goal of the season off the post to add to the home team's lead.
Before the clock hit zero for halftime, Bryant scored their first goal of the night off a penalty stroke. The Bulldogs added two more goals in the third and fourth quarter to knot the game, 3-3, and send it into overtime.
Thirty-seven seconds into overtime, the game turned into Chamberlain hands as she to put the nail in the coffin for the victory over visitors. First-year goalie, Samantha Maresca garnered her first win with one save on five shots.
Sacred Heart is back on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m. to face the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
