Field Hockey Narrowly Loses at Rider, 3-2

The Pioneers wrap up their season on Halloween at Quinnipiac.

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — With the game knotted, 2-2, off the stick of Mikayla VanHorn, the Sacred Heart University's field hockey team came up short at Rider after a late goal in the fourth quarter. The Red & White concluded their conference schedule in a 3-2 loss against the Broncos on Thursday.

Rider initiated the scoring to grab a 1-0 lead to end the first quarter.

Mia Katterman slapped in the first tying shot of the night five minutes into the second off the co-captain's rebounded penalty corner shot for her third goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Julia Divorra connected with the net for the second time to put the Broncos up, 2-1, going into halftime.

For her first shot of the season, VanHorn tallied the Pioneer's second game-tying shot off a close pass from Katie Rogers halfway through the third quarter.

The Broncos scored the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the final quarter off a penalty corner to secure the win.

SHU capitalized on two of its three shots, while the home team attempted 16 to land three. Goalkeepers Erin Burgess and Samantha Maresca spilt time in the cage for a combined 12 saves.

The team's final game of the regular season is at 2 p.m. on Halloween at Quinnipiac.
