FAIRFIELD, Conn. — At the SHU Invitational, the Sacred Heart University men's fencing team captured a pair of victories against Vassar and NJIT. On Sunday, the hosts lost, 6-2, with five single weapon wins.
Lawrence Tan and
Tomas Koeck held down the foil squad after going 10-7 and 9-8.
Connor Kravit led the epee fencers with a 10-7 bout victory record.
Tan avoided any loss against Northeast Fencing Conference competitor Vassar and NJIT in the second and sixth rounds. The junior aided in the close, 4-5, defeat against NYU after going 2-1.
Kravit had himself a night with four individual bout wins. Against VC, the newcomer went undefeated in the epee, followed by a 2-1 mark against Ivy League school Princeton, Penn State and NYU.
On the strip, Koeck denied PSU a win in the foil. The veteran kept Vassar and NYU on their toes with a 2-1 bout victory record.
Cameron Silver handed NJIT a goose egg in the epee and maintained a 2-1 record against Penn State.
In the second round, Mateo Villarreal and Domenic Bartolo also contributed to VC's downfall with their own 2-1 records. Ganta went on to repeat that record against Princeton and NJIT, while his teammate came out undefeated against the Highlanders.
Luke Fenwick went 2-2 in the foil with both his wins against the Highlanders, where the three weapons secured the 15-12 triumph.
As a substitution, Frank Riccio secured the winning point in the epee's successful 6-3 round against NJIT in the sixth.
The Red & White take a long break going into the new year with their next meet on January 22 at the University of Pennsylvania.
