Pioneers Lose Season Opener at Clarkson

Frankie Sanchez nabs 48 saves in 6-1 defeat

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. — Seventeen years since their first meeting, the Sacred Heart University women's hockey team dropped a 6-1 contest on the road on Friday. Sophie Lupone's goal was the first time the Pioneers scored against Clarkson after being shutout, 11-0 and 3-0, during the 2003-04 campaign.
 
SHU starts 0-1-0, while CU improves to 1-0-0 on the season.
 
Lupone opened the scoring with a short-handed goal assisted by Cassandra Nevers in the first three minutes of play. 
 
The Golden Knights tallied three in the first period to take the lead, followed by a fourth eight minutes into the second. In the opening seconds of the final period, the home team scored another goal, along with their sixth off a power play before the clock hit 0:00.
 
Clarkson outshot the visitors, 86-27, but Sacred Heart racked up 12 blocks over its opponents' three. The Red & White's goalie, Frankie Sanchez, saved 48 shots for a .889 save percentage.
 
SHU stays in New York for a rematch against CU on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. puck drop.
