SHELTON, Conn. — In back-to-back games, the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team shutout NEWHA opponent Saint Michael's, 5-0. Veteran goaltender
Frankie Sanchez stood tall in the cage as she denied all 18 shots on Saturday.
The senior claimed a career-high six scoreless contests with half coming from SMC matchups.
The Pioneers moved to third with a 14-11-2 overall record and 9-5-2 in the league, while the Purple Knights remained last with 2-17-1 and 0-13-1.
With a minute and a half remaining in the opening period,
Alexa Ocel connected with the back of the net off the sticks of
Paige McNeil and
Anna Klein.
The trio had a hand in the next two goals as Klein scored without assistance in the second, while Ocel and McNeil set up
Kennedy Spiering's goal in the final period.
For the first time in her career, first-year
Kerryn O'Connell netted goals in back-to-back games. After scoring the game-winning goal on Friday against the Purple Knights, O'Connell found the back of the net again at the 14:58 mark in the third period.
Megan Gates assisted the goal to give SHU a 4-0 cushion.
The third period saw one last Red & White goal as
Cannady Taleghani snuck the fifth goal past the visiting goalkeeper off the pass from
Charlotte Huntington.
Sacred Heart is on the road on February 18-19 at Saint Anselm, with 4 and 1 p.m. puck drops.
