ERIE, Pa. – A year ago, the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling program existed only on paper. Sunday the Pioneers had four wrestlers qualify for the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship at the Northeast Regional, hosted by Gannon University.

Representing Sacred Heart at Adrian College on March 4-5 will be Ashley Reed (191 pounds), Madison Sandquist (143 pounds), Jacklyn Smith (170 pounds) and Temi Sanusi (143 pounds). Reed won the title at 191 while Sandquist and Smith finished second. Sanusi placed fifth.

As a team, the Pioneers finished sixth at 73.5 points. Tiffin University won the team title with 165.5 points.

The top seed at 191 pounds, Reed blew through her opponents on the way to the finals. The Southington, Conn. native got started with a tech fall versus Elmira's Tayana Labady. She pinned Daniella Morales from Gannon in 1:58 then only needed 31 seconds to pin Yamilex Perez from Adrian to punch her ticket to nationals. Reed beat seventh-ranked Sandra Guerrero of New Jersey City for the third time this season, 4-3, to win the championship.

The number two seed, Sandquist started the day by pinning Adrian's Jasmine Hale in 1:42. Another pin, this one in 1:37 against Leslie Monterrosa of Elmira, put her into the semifinals. The Humble, Texas native beat the third seed Stephanie Floor from Gannon, 15-6. She lost her championship bid, getting pinned by ESU's Avia Bibeau.

Smith had a bye in the first round then the fourth seed beat Elmira's Hazel Dahlquist, 6-2.  A native of Bridgeport, Conn, she got her spot at nationals by pinning Kayley Rada of Adrian in 4:46. Her championship bid was stopped, 11-4, by Adrian's Aspen Dodge.

Sanusi started with a bye then lost 12-2 to the number four seed Avia Bibeau of East Stroudsburg. She battled her way through the consolation bracket with a 13-1 tech fall versus Rachel Degiulio of ESU then beat Adrian's Jasmine Hale, 4-1. A 12-2 tech fall loss to Floor put her in the fifth-place bout where she recorded a 4-1 win against Sidney Ramos to earn her spot at nationals.

After an opening 6-2 loss to Gannon's Mikayla Dockweiler, Tays Pascual came back to post a 6-0 win against Davenport's Alicia Mendez. She was stopped 8-6 by Shawna Oesterling of Adrian.

It was a tough run for Savannah Vanase at 136 pounds as she lost 11-0 to the second seed, Arianna Carrasquillo from Tiffan, in her opening match. Her run was over with a 6-2 loss to Dockweiller.

Ayeska Zanetti had a tough opening match, losing 10-0 to the eighth-ranked wrestler in the country, Gannon's Anya Kappenberger. She lost 5-2 to Lock Haven's Lily Shere then got pinned by Renee Richter in the seventh-place match.
