Sacred Heart Drops Close 11-10 Contest at Fairfield

Werlau notches 100th career goal

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team couldn't make a halftime lead stand up Saturday at Fairfield. The Pioneers came up short, 11-10.

Of Note
Claire Ferguson notched the game's first goal at the 10:47 mark before Fairfield responded with two goals. Grace Reinold and Mikala Eacrett tallied two under the seven-minute mark, but the Stags registered two of their own to maintain the lead at the end of the first quarter, 4-3. 

With 3:10 left in the second quarter, Emma Kittredge tallied a goal and the Pioneers went on a 3-0 run to take the 6-5 lead going into halftime. 

Fairfield notched two goals within the first two minutes of the third quarter to get back on top, 7-6. Kittredge registered her second goal of the game at the 10:59 mark to tie the game, 7-7. The Stags chipped the ball into the net for the one-point advantage at the end of the third quarter, 8-7. 

After Fairfield scored three goals to start the fourth quarter, Eacrett found Reinold for the man-up goal to bring the score within two. At the 4:10 mark, Lydia Werlau flipped the ball into the net for her 100th career goal.

In the final minutes, the senior attacker found Sydney Colesworthy for a goal that brought the score back within one, 11-10. Kittredge attempted a shot with 34 seconds left for a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation, but it went wide and the Stags held on for the win.

Ferguson, Kittredge, Reinold and Werlau tallied two goals apiece, while goalkeeper Lisa Martin collected nine saves.
