SHU Bested in Midweek Tilt 16-8

Ward and Spooner led SHU with three points

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Two scoreless quarters for the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team was the deciding factor in its 16-8 non-conference loss to Lafayette on Tuesday.

The Pioneers hit the road for the first time in three games on Saturday. SHU will play Wagner at 5 p.m. on NEC Front Row. 
 
Of Note:
The Leopards jumped to a 5-0 lead as they held the Pioneers scoreless in the first quarter. It wasn't until 7:22 in the second quarter when Jake Ward got the Pioneers on the board to make it 8-1. The goal sparked a 5-0 run including three goals that were scored in less than 30 seconds of one another. The run pulled SHU within three, but two more from the visitors doubles the Pioneers' score by halftime, 10-5. 
 
Sacred Heart was held to just three goals in the second half that all came in the third frame. Two of the three goals came during man-up opportunities, and both were assisted by Ward. 
 
Carson Spooner and Ward led the Pioneers with three points. Spooner netted two goals and tallied one assist, while Ward found the back of the net once and dished out two. 
 
Lafayette was the aggressor as they outshot SHU, 43-29, and 16-1 in the first quarter alone. 
 
The Pioneers had trouble taking care of the ball as they committed 18 turnovers, compared to the Leopards' seven. Lafayette also went 22-for-23 in clear attempts while SHU was 16-for-24.
