SHU Comes Up Short At Wagner 14-8

Sal Miccio and Carson Spooner led with two goals apiece

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A slow second half was the deciding factor in the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team's 14-8 Northeast Conference loss at Wagner on Saturday evening.

The Pioneers host Merrimack on Saturday at 12 p.m. for its Paws of War game. SHU will honor veterans and offer free admission for all fans. 
 
Of Note:
The two teams went nearly goal-for-goal in the first half, but the Seahawks held a one-goal advantage, 6-5, at the half. 
 
Wagner outscored Sacred Heart 8-3 in the second half, and 5-2 in the third quarter alone. The Seahawks came out of the halftime break hot as they netted four-straight to pull away. 
 
Sacred Heart was held to just one goal from Carson Spooner in the final frame.  Spooner's goal cut the deficit to three, but Wagner netted three more before the final buzzer. 
 
The Pioneers were only able to capitalize on one man-up opportunity. Wagner committed six penalties compared to SHU's two. The Red & White held the Seahawks scoreless when defending with a man down. 
 
The Seahawks outshot the Pioneers 49-33 and 31-17 in shots on goal. 
 
Sophomore Sal Miccio posted his third-consecutive multi-goal game with two. He led the team with four points on the day with an added two assists. The game also marked his ninth-straight multi-point performance this season as he has yet to tally less than two points in a single game. 
 
Spooner matched Miccio with two goals. 
 
Daniel Rodriguez went 14-26 in at faceoff. The senior was one of two Pioneers to lead with five ground balls, as he also added one assist and one caused turnover. 
 
Nicky LaBanca and Alex Pazienza split time between the pipes. LaBanca played the first 45 minutes and stopped 12 while Pazienza finished off the final 15 minutes and stopped five.
