Temi Sanusi and
Jacklyn Smith are all guaranteed to finish in the top eight of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships, held at Adrian College.
After Friday's opening day, the Pioneers are in 14
th place with 22.5 points. McKendree University leads with 158 points. The two-day competition wraps up on Saturday with the final two rounds of the consolation bracket and championship finals.
Sandquist is into the semifinals of the consolation bracket at 143 pounds and can finish no lower than sixth. Sanusi (143 pounds) and Smith (170 pounds) will wrestler for seventh place.
At 143 pounds, Sandquist had to wrestle five matches with four victories. She opened with a 7-0 win over Emmanuel's Gianna Anaya before pinning Clara Scaglioni of Simon Fraser in 28 seconds. The Humble, Texas native rebounded from a loss in the quarterfinals to the top seed, Alara Boyd from McKendree, to pin Kya Rybachek of Augsburg in 4:48 and cinch All-America status.
A key takedown in the second period gave her an 11-7 win versus Kim Nunez of North Central. Sandquist will face Avia Bibeau of East Stroudsburg in the consolation semifinals.
In the same weight class, Sanusi started the day by beating Lindenwood's Julianna Moreno, 9-2. She fell to the number two seed, Ashlynn Ortega of King, by a 10-0 tech fall. A native of Houston, Texas, she garnered All-America accolades by topping Colorado Mesa's Erica Schroeder, 8-4. CMU's Kaylee Lacy stopped her with a 10-0 tech fall to set up a seventh-place bout on Saturday with Nunez.
Smith had a tough route to her All-America award as she lost 10-0 to the number eight seed, Joye Levendusky from McKendree. She started her way back through the consolation bracket by pinning ESU's Briana Simsic in only 21 seconds. The Bridgeport native secured her top-eight finish by beating Tabitha Breitrick of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 6-2. McKendree's Grace Kristoff stopped her run with a pin, but Smith will be back to face Tatum Heikkila of CMU in the seventh-place match.
Ashley Reed started by pinning Elmira's Tanya Labady in 5:00 of their 191-pound bout. She got beat by Colorado Mesa's Jayleen Sekona, 6-0, in the championship bracket then fell 8-4 to Sydni Scott from William Jewel to end her season.
