FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Pioneers were pouring shots at Martire Family Arena today. Shots on goal that is, a season-high 54 on the way to a 3-2 win and a sweep of the weekend series against Post.
The four-point weekend keeps the Sacred Heart women's hockey team (13-13-1, 10-7-1) in third place among NEWHA squads with 21 points.
The visitors got on the board first just 3:37 into the game, and the Pioneers did not respond until 48 seconds into the middle frame. Captain
Kelly Solak found a loose puck in the high slot and fired a hard wrister blocker side to even the score and notch her sixth goal of the season.
SHU, which has won three straight, continued to pour on the shots and wear down the Eagles' defense.
First-year center
Iyla Ryskamp broke the deadlock 3:19 into the third by scoring her sixth from close range before sophomore winger
Sydney Antonakis (8
th), who had a two-point afternoon, floated a shot from the point over Hannah Saunders to give the home team a 3-1 lead.
Molly Elmore, the Pios' junior goalie, stopped 22 of 24 shots to earn the win.
"Today there was more energy on the bench," said SHU head coach Tom O'Malley, comparing this game to yesterday's 3-2 win over Post. "That energy went on to the ice. It's nice to get three different goal scorers.
Molly Elmore played a great game and faced a lot of tough challenges."
