Pioneers Travel to Merrimack in a Battle of NEC Favorites

The two were selected as the top two teams in the preseason coaches poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Fresh off its first Northeast Conference victory of the season on Saturday, 82-64 at LIU, the Sacred Heart men's basketball team travels to Merrimack for its third conference game, tomorrow evening, January 5th at 7:00 PM. The two teams were selected as the top two in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll and both are 1-1 in conference play so far. The Pioneers, who were picked second in the poll, have a 7-9 overall record. The Warriors, who were selected first in the NEC, are currently 3-13 on the season.

Opening Tip: 
  • This is the seventh Division I, NEC meeting between the two teams. Merrimack holds the advantage in the series, 1-5. The Pioneers last win over the Warriors was on January 8, 2021, in a 68-62 road victory. Mike Sixsmith was second on the team in scoring with 17 points.
  • Merrimack and SHU were the top two picks in the NEC Preseason Poll. The Warriors were selected first, and the Pioneers were picked second.
  • The Pioneers won its first NEC game of the season on Saturday at LIU, 82-64. Bryce Johnson recorded his fourth double-double of the season in the win.
  • Galette has scored in double figures in every game this season as he leads the team with 16.0 points per game. Raheem Solomon (12.1), and senior Joey Reilly (10.4) are also averaging double figures for the Pioneers.
  • Johnson has four double-doubles this season, and Galette has two. Johnson leads the team in rebounds, 7.7 per game, and Galette is second with 6.9.
  • The Pioneers had Aidan Carpenter and Brendan McGuire back in the lineup against Stonehill, for the first time together since the season opener at Hartford.
  • This season, Galette earned NEC Player of the Week once and has been a four-time Prime Performer.
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 10th season as the head coach of Sacred Heart.
  • Galette was named to the All-NEC preseason team.
  • Sacred Heart was tabbed second in the NEC preseason poll.
