SHU Suffers Senior Day Setback

Kelleher scores and Kipperman saves seven in loss

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — An early second half goal was not enough to propel a comeback as the Sacred Heart University women's soccer team fell on senior day to Howard University, 3-1.

Both teams braved the windy conditions at kickoff, looking to open the scoring with chances off the wings as Howard was able to convert on its first clear opportunity of the match to gain an early advantage. Having earned a free kick just outside the Pioneer penalty area, the Bison played short as Zoe Moore had space to wire a curling shot past SHU goalkeeper Elyssa Kipperman and into the bottom corner to claim the 1-0 lead.

Late in the first half, the Bison doubled the lead off a brilliant finish outside the penalty area by Samantha James. Having already earned an assist on the game-opening goal, James beat a SHU defender to the inside and smashed a high, curling effort into the top-right corner as Howard pounced to a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Having made attacking substitutions at halftime, the Pioneers finally broke through and halved the lead as Shea Kelleher notched her fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute. After a Morgan Bovardi shot was parried wide, Kelleher corralled the loose ball and fired a near-post shot that beat Howard's Trinity Knox to cut the deficit in half.

With under 20 minutes remaining, the Bison reclaimed their two-goal cushion after converting on the remnants of a corner kick. Having sent in a dangerous ball, Howard's Rachel Suttle found a loose ball inside the six-yard box and slotted it past Kipperman to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers continued to fight but could not convert on their opportunities late in the match as the Bison held on for the 3-1 win.
