Sacred Heart Takes Down Saint Francis 16-9

Pioneers start NEC play 1-0

LORETTO, Pa.— The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team start Northeast Conference play 1-0 after picking up a deserving 16-9 victory in its league opener at Saint Francis on Saturday.

Of Note
Both teams traded back-and-forth goals in the first six minutes of the contest. Graduate student Lydia Werlau scored on the free position to give SHU the one-point lead at the end, 4-3.
 
The Pioneers had a masterful performance in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Flash, 5-1. Senior Emma Kittredge put SHU up by two at the 4:30 mark. Werlau and fellow graduate student Grace Reinold combined for three-straight goals that were all on the free position to make it a 9-4 game at the half.
 
SHU extended its scoring run to 7-0 at the start of the third quarter after back-to-back goals from Werlau and Maggie Araneo. SFU ended its scoring drought with a point at the 7:54 mark.
 
First year Emi Waldron found Werlau for her fourth goal and the Pioneers notched three unanswered points to make it a 14-6 game in the early minutes of the fourth.
 
After the Red Flash cut the deficit within six, the team closed out with another string of back-to-back goals from senior Sydney Colesworthy and junior Kelly Nolan.
 
SHU outshot SFU, 42-22, including 35-17 in between the pipes. The Pioneers also picked up 20 ground balls compared to the Red Flash's nine.
 
Werlau led with a game-high five goals while Kittredge and Reinold finished with three apiece.
