SHU Drops California Finale

Thievon accounts for seven saves in second start

La Jolla, Calif. — Sacred Heart University women's soccer battled hard but could not find an equalizer, falling to Cal-San Diego, 1-0, on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-2 this season while The Tritons earn their first win of the season, improving to 1-0-1.

The first half was marred by fouls and fatigue as both teams dealt with tired personnel after playing Thursday night and rescheduling the match to Saturday evening due to upcoming inclement weather in the San Diego area. After a majority of possession in the SHU area, however, the hosts found a break after a defensive miscue from the Pioneers resulted in the opening goal as the Tritons took a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would hold off the Tritons through the rest of the half, including a goal-line clearance from Ellie David, as UCSD held the lead at halftime.

The Pioneers started the second half strong and, after receiving a free kick at the halfway line, had their best chance of the night. Off the ensuing set piece, the Pioneers found space along the wing and floated a cross to Kelly Medeiros who deflected the ball towards the goal but could not push it past UCSD's goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald who made the save. The Pioneers continued to search for the equalizer but could not solve Fitzgerald as the Tritons came away with the 1-0 win.

Top Perfomers: Of Note:
  • First year defender Ellie David made her first appearance in the Pioneer playing the full 90 minutes after a 59-minutes showing in SHU's season opener against San Diego State.
  • Four Pioneers would play the full match including Kelly Medeiros and Alexis Sickler.
  • Thievon's seven saves mathes her save total from Thursday's match against San Diego State.
Scoring Summary:
17' – After an errant pass along the SHU backline, UCSD's Courtney Hilliard retrieved the ball and made her way into the Pioneer penalty area, firing a low shot that beat Thievon and headed into the bottom right corner. UCSD 1, SHU 0
