SHU Downed by Cornell, 8-0

Pios back home again next Sunday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 24, 2023) – Back home for the first time in three weeks, the Sacred Heart University field hockey team suffered an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Cornell on Sunday afternoon. Caroline Ramsey scored four times to lead the visiting Big Red to the non-conference victory at Johnson Field.

Cornell (5-2) scored five times in the first quarter and never looked back. Ramsey, the Ivy League's leading goal scorer, had her hat trick completed 8:08 into the proceedings. She struck on drives from the top of the circle on three corner opportunities in a span of just 3:46 in the opening stanza. Her younger sister, Julia Ramsey, assisted on all three.

Vivienne Mueller finished off a feed from Polly Parsons in front of the right post in the 10th minute, and Grace Leahy put away a rebound in the 13th minute to cap the opening-quarter barrage.

Things settled down from there, though Cornell did find the net three more times to win going away. Caroline Ramsey made it a four-goal afternoon by salting away a penalty stroke 48 seconds before halftime for her 13th goal of the season. On the other side of the intermission, just 34 seconds into the third, Parsons added a goal to go with her earlier assist. Hanke Govaert finished off the continuation of a corner play following the third-quarter horn to create the 8-0 final.

For SHU (1-6), Samantha Maresca (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) made nine saves and suffered the loss (1-6) in net. Cornell split time between two goalkeepers, with neither being forced to record a save. Martha Broderick (5-2) played the first 38 minutes and was credited with the win.

The Pios have a pair of games on the schedule in the coming week. They will open NEC play at LIU on Friday at noon, before returning home to host Quinnipiac in a non-conference tilt at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
