Pios Sweep Stonehill in Road NEC Play

SHU moves to 3-0 in conference

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team remains perfect in Northeast Conference play after sweeping Stonehill on Friday evening at the Skyhawks' Merkert Gymnasium.

How It Happened:
After trading points at the start of the match, the Pios pulled ahead 7-4 following a 4-0 run. The Skyhawks answered by tying the score at 10-all, but the Pioneers quickly regained the momentum with an 8-3 run to go up 18-13. Stonehill bit into SHU's lead late in the set, but Sacred Heart held firm to take the frame by four, 25-21. 

Both teams started the second with 3-0 runs before SHU pulled ahead 11-6 after a 4-0 run. Hunter Coppola fueled the surge with a kill and an ace. The Pios continued to add to their lead for the remainder of the set, going up by as much as eight, 24-16, before taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win. 

SHU started the third set on fire by winning 13 of the first 18 points to storm ahead 13-5. Sacred Heart continued to widen its advantage, going up double-digits 19-9. With a commanding 22-14 lead late, the Pios iced the match with back-to-back kills by Coppola to earn the road NEC sweep. 

Gaby Zovko posted another all-around performance for the Pioneers tonight with 18 assists, eight digs and four blocks. Dominique Felix led the SHU offense with six kills. Coppola posted one of her strongest performances as a Pio with a season-high five kills, four digs and three aces.
