SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Ella and
Bria Holm provided the needed offense as the Sacred Heart University women's hockey team grabbed its third New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) sweep of the season, dispatching Saint Michael's College, 4-1, on Saturday evening.
With a decisive 6-0 victory last night, the Pios continued where they left off in Saturday's contest, pestering Saint Michael's for the majority of the opening period. With the momentum – and the game's first power play – the Pios had ample opportunity to break open the scoring but were stonewalled by the SMC defense which negated all four SHU bids on the power play.
Having failed to score in the first period last night, the Pioneers changed the narrative late in the opening frame as
Ella Holm connected for her fourth of the season and second of the series to give SHU a 1-0 lead with three minutes to go. SHU continued driving towards its second goal of the afternoon with a late power play, but came up empty, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
SHU continued where it left off in the first period, sending chance after chance in on the Saint Michael's net before doubling the lead just past the halfway mark of the period. With a turnover in the neutral zone,
Bria Holm went on the rush and wired a wrsit shot through a defender and past the stick side of the SMC netminder to put the Pios ahead 2-0. With minutes remaining in the second period, SHU's defense held strong as relief netminder
Lauren Larson made her way into the game for Petruno. Larson stopped the one shot that made its way on frame to keep the scoreline in favor of SHU through 40 minutes, 2-0.
Saint Michael's clawed back into the game with a tally early on the frame, cutting into the SHU lead with an Audrey Hetman tally two minutes into the third period. However, the Pios tallied twice in the span of three minutes late in the third period to put the game out of reach.
Alyssa Antonakis got the scoring surge started with under eight minutes to play in regulation, sending a shot from behind the cage that deflected off a body in front and into the back of the net to restore the two-goal lead. Three minutes later,
Isabella Chaput grabbed her sixth of the year, finishing off a sweet a tic-tac-toe play from
Olivia LaRoche and
Savannah Popick on the power play to put SHU ahead 4-1 as SHU extended its win streak to four games with the 4-1 win.
Of Note:
- Bria Holm is now on a three-game scoring streak which is the longest of her career.
- Alyssa Antonakis' tally is her second of the season and first since scoring in game two against Stonehill (10/19).
- With a goal, Ella Holm has now scored in consecutive games for the first time in her collegiate career.
- In the win, the Pios recorded a game with four different goal scorers for the fifth time this season.
- Chaput's power-play tally is her second goal in the last three games and her team-leading sixth of the season.
