Men's Basketball Drops Road Game at LIU

Kyle McGee led three players in double figures

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Kyle McGee scored 16 points, leading three players in double figures as the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team fell 75-58 at LIU on Saturday evening in Northeast Conference action.

Of Note:
Sacred Heart and LIU split the season series, each winning a game on their home courts. After a tight opening half, the Sharks had a strong second half, outscoring the Pioneers 42-25 to take the victory.  

After trailing 8-5 through the opening four minutes of play, Joey Reilly and Alex Sobel made back-to-back buckets, sparking an 8-0 run as the Pioneers came from behind and took a 13-8 lead.

LIU answered with an 8-0 run of their own, taking a three-point lead at 11:47. Galette and Reilly scored back-to-back jumpers for the Pioneers to jump ahead by one, 17-16.

The Sharks were able to take a four-point lead with seven minutes left in the half, but a pair of layups from Brendan McGuire and Reilly put SHU ahead again, 26-25. Neither team led by more than two points until a free throw for LIU put the Sharks ahead, 33-30, with 44 seconds left in the half. McGee knocked down a triple to head into halftime tied up, 33-33.

McGee hit another three-pointer to open the second half, putting the Pioneers ahead 36-35, and a Raheem Solomon trey gave Sacred Heart a four-point advantage 41-37 at 16:46. LIU answered with back-to-back triples to push the Sharks ahead, 48-43.

From there, LIU led the rest of the way. A pair of free throws for McGee cut the deficit to six with 11:25 left in the second, but the Sharks extended their lead to double digits at 10:35 and maintained the advantage throughout the remainder of the night. LIU hit seven triples in the second half to solidify the victory.

Sacred Heart will return to action with its third straight road game next Saturday, February 17, at Wagner at 4:00 pm. The game will be streamed to ESPN+.
