STRUTHERS, Ohio – The No. 11-ranked Sacred Heart University bowling team placed sixth at the three-day Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State at the Holiday Bowl in Struthers, Ohio.
The Pioneers finished the event with an 8-5 overall record, qualifying sixth heading into Sunday's championship round. SHU met No. 3 Vanderbilt in the fifth-place match, falling 4-2 to the Commadores.
Sacred Heart faced a challenging schedule at the event, as the team played eight matches against nationally-ranked opponents. The highlight for SHU was a 1,056-910 baker win over No. 1 Jacksonville State. The Pios also defeated No. 14 Mount St. Mary's (Md.) and No. 25 Niagara, while also losing by just one pin to the defending national champions of Youngstown State (922-921).
Seniors
Megan Prettyman and
Hope Bunk led the way for SHU with the highest averages in five traditional matches. Prettyman averaged 195.00 pins with a high of 222 in the win over Mount St. Mary's (Md.). Bunk averaged 187.60 pins, hitting 200 against Mount.
Madilyn Yockel maintained an average of 200.50 over four matches, with a high of 237.
Cira Arcangel (209.67) and
Morgan LiCausi (204.67) both sat over 200 in three matches.
The Pioneers will be back in action at the Destination Florida on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 24-26, as SHU will host the event at the AMF Sky Lanes in Orlando, Fla.
