Pioneers Power Past Holy Cross, 79–66

SHU hits season-high 16 threes; five players score in double figures in home win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Behind hot three-point shooting, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team defeated Holy Cross, 79-66, on Friday evening at the Pitt Center. Mekhi Conner led five Pioneers in double figures, and Anquan Hill posted his second double-double of the season. Sacred Heart knocked down a season-high 16 three-pointers in the victory.

How it happened:
Sacred Heart opened the game with a quick 5-0 burst, highlighted by a Jaden Slaughter steal and layup and a three-pointer from Yann Farell. After Holy Cross briefly went ahead 10-8, the Pioneers responded with an 11-0 run fueled by threes from Dashon Gittens and Hill to take a 19-10 lead at the 9:56 mark.

Later in the half, SHU put together a 14-0 stretch to build its largest lead of the period at 40-22. The run included a pair of triples from Fallou Gueye and five points from Hill. Gittens capped the half with a three-pointer to send SHU into the break up 43-32.

Holy Cross cut the deficit to 45-37 early in the second half, but the Pioneers answered immediately with a 12-2 run through the 14:52 mark. Gittens drilled another three to give SHU its largest lead of the night at 20.

The Crusaders pulled within 11 multiple times the rest of the way, but the Pioneers consistently responded to maintain a double-digit cushion and secure the 79-66 final.

Sacred Heart shot 40% (16-40) from beyond the arc and received 20 points from its bench.

  • Hill recorded his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Conner scored a season-high 18 points and hit four threes.
  • Slaughter posted a career-high 13 points while shooting 60% (6-10).
  • Gittens has scored in double figures in four straight games.
