Two Second Period Goals Lift Franklin Pierce Over Women’s Hockey

Greene makes 31 saves in goal for SHU

WINCHENDON, Mass. - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team ran into a hot goaltender at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena on Saturday. Gwen Bowler turned in a memorable Senior Day performance, stopping all 36 shots she faced, to lead Franklin Pierce to a 2-0 NEWHA victory over the Pioneers.

Carly Greene was strong in goal for SHU. She finished with 31 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Both Franklin Pierce goals came in the second period and both were disputed. On the first at 6:12, Courtney Swensen scored after a scramble in front when the whistle may have blown before the puck crossed the line. On the second at 19:30, Maggie Korneta banged in a rebound after it appeared Greene had covered the puck long enough to warrant a whistle.

• Sacred Heart applied heavy pressure in the third period but couldn't solve Bowler. The Pioneers peppered her with 19 shots, but she stopped them all.

NOTES

• Bowler, a senior, was making only her fourth start of the season.

• Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

Isabella Chaput led the Pioneers with six shots. Kate Helgeson added five.

• With one weekend remaining in the regular season, Sacred Heart remains in second place with 48 points, four fewer than first-place LIU.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season with a two-game series with Post next weekend. The teams meet at Martire Family Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. and then play in Waterbury on Saturday.
