Women’s Volleyball Set for Two Matches at UConn Classic

Pios begin the event on Saturday against Brown at 1 p.m.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team makes the short trip to Storrs this weekend for two matches at the UConn Classic. SHU will play Brown first on Saturday at 1 p.m. before a Sunday showdown against the hosting Huskies at 3 p.m. on Sunday. 

ACE IN THE HOLE
The Pioneers have been on fire at the service line, setting season-highs in aces in back-to-back matches, both of which were wins. After tallying 12 aces in four sets against NJIT on Saturday, before recording 13 in five sets at CCSU. The star at the line has been Miliani Villarreal with a career-high five aces against the Highlanders and four against the Blue Devils. SHU has climbed to 33rd in the country with 69 aces on the year. 

ACROSS THE NET
SCOUTING BROWN
  • The Bears are .500 heading into this weekend, owning a 3-3 record. 
  • Brown is returning to the Northeast after last taking part in a tournament at UCF. 
  • The Bears fell to Florida Atlantic in five sets and Arkansas State in three sets, but topped the hosts in the final match in four sets. 
  • Senior libero Jessie Golden has gotten off to a good start to the season, as she ranks 38th in the country and second in the Ivy with 4.48 digs per set. 
  • The defending Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, tallied 20 kills twice at UCF, 23 in the five-setter against FAU and 20 in the four-set win over the Knights. 
  • Offensively, senior outside hitter Mariia Sidorova paces the team with 3.19 kills per set. 
ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Pioneers and Bears will meet for a sixth time on Saturday.
  • Brown owns a slim 3-2 lead in the all-time series. 
  • SHU's two wins against the Bears came in Fairfield. 
SCOUTING UCONN
  • The Huskies head into their home tournament with an impressive 8-1 overall record. 
  • UConn's lone setback came against Yale in five sets. 
  • SHU will mark the Huskies' second MAAC foe of the year, as they own a 3-2 win over Fairfield. 
  • A key to UConn's early success this season has been the team's dominance at the service line. 
  • The Huskies rank 15th nationally in total aces (76) and 21st in aces per set (2.11). 
  • UConn is hitting at a 0.271 clip as a team, which is 33rd in DI. 
  • Senior outside hitter Emma Werkmeister has been a versatile threat for the Huskies, as she leads the team in aces (0.53) and kills per set (3.61). 
ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Pios and Huskies will battle for a seventh time on Sunday. 
  • UConn has won five of the six previous meetings, with SHU's win coming in four sets in 2011.
