FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team erased a three-goal deficit in a 4-4 tie to Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) leading Bentley on Saturday evening at the Martire Family Arena, as the Falcons claimed the extra league point with a shootout win.
Records:
SHU: 12-7-3, 9-4-3 AHA
Bentley: 12-7-3, 11-2-3 AHA
How It Happened
Two lucky breaks led to Bentley building a 2-0 lead in the first period. Both Falcons' goals came by forcing turnovers on the forecheck, leading to easy shots at the crease.
After an early second-period goal put Bentley ahead 3-0, the Pioneers were in desperate need of a spark, and that's exactly what they got from
Ray Fust. The senior, in his 101st collegiate game, hopped off the ground and tipped a
Mikey Adamson shot by Bentley's Lukas Swedin to put the Pioneers on the board at 4:22 in the second.
The Pios continued to chip away 10:41 into the second.
Marcus Joughin scored his second of the season to make it 3-2 by tipping the puck in the air to himself before whacking it across in midair.
However, SHU continued its relentless pursuit to tie the score, as a
Stephane Huard goal knotted the game at 3-3 at 15:44.
Gavin Bryant started the play by putting a shot on frame, which led to a Bentley player slapping the puck out of the crease with his hand. The puck found Huard's skate before a Falcon came barreling in and knocked it into the net.
Bentley retook the lead 9:50 into the third, again putting the Pioneers' backs against the ropes.
As has been a theme with Sacred Heart this season, the team would not go down without a fight. The Pioneers found the equalizer at 11:28, when
Felix Trudeau buried a slap shot from the right circle on the power play.
Neither team scored over the final 11:28, as the game went to overtime tied at 4-4. By making OT, SHU secured at least one conference point tonight.
Overtime also went scoreless, as SHU went into its third shootout of the season. The Falcons took the shootout 2-0 to claim the extra AHA point.
Teagan Kendrick finished the game with 39 saves, one shy of his third 40-save game. With the tie, Kendrick is up to 6-2-2.
