Tom Barrett returns to Sacred Heart as an assistant coach ahead of the 2023-24 season. Barrett spent the prior two years at Rutgers University working under Coach Steve Pikiell, serving as the Director of External Operations.Â
During Barrett’s first season as an assistant coach with SHU, the Pioneers made their sixth consecutive Northeast Conference Tournament appearance, finishing the regular season as the third seed. Barrett coached three all-conference selections during the 2023-24 season.Â
While at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, marking the first time RU made the big dance in consecutive seasons since 1976. Barrett was mainly responsible for analytics and special projects while also helping with scouting reports during his time at Rutgers.
Â
Before Rutgers, Barrett spent four seasons at Sacred Heart as the team’s Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Operations. Barrett’s first stint at SHU was highlighted by the 2019-20 season in which Sacred Heart had their best season at the NCAA Division I level as the Pioneers won 20 games and advanced to the semifinals of the NEC Tournament. The 2019-20 squad was the first Pioneer team to reach 20 wins since the 1988-89 season and was the first team to reach that mark in the Division I era. The team also won their first postseason game since 2009, earning a 61-59 win over Mount Saint Mary’s.  Â
Â
Barrett came to SHU after serving as Director of Operations and Recruiting Coordinator at Maine. At Maine, Barrett was responsible for scheduling, maintaining the program budget, and coordinating student managers, among many other operational roles.
Â
Barrett also spent a season at the University of Delaware as the team’s video coordinator. For the Blue Hens, he oversaw all video work and coordinated film edits of practice, games, and opponents.
Â
Barrett began his postgraduate career in basketball in 2012 at Downingtown East High School in Exton, Pa. He spent three years as the junior varsity head coach and as an assistant with the varsity team.
Â
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Temple in 2012. He served as a student manager for the Owls from 2009-2012.Â
